Definition

Acronym for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist. That group of feminists that claims that trans women aren’t really women, as biological determinism is only a fallacy when used against them, not when they use it against others.

Usage

Isn’t it mindboggling that the Royal College of Psychiatrists would invite a TERF like Julie Bindel to come talk at a study day on transgenderism and transsexuality? That’s like inviting Fred Phelps to come deliver the keynote at a gay pride.  

Acronym of the day (new to me)!

Bigotry is bigotry. Whether it’s transphobia from a close-minded conservative or a radfem or anyone, it’s wrong.

This may sound petulant to some, but do bi/pansexual, asexual, trans* people (and/or anyone I didn’t mention) feel left out when seemingly open-minded liberal people talk about “gay and straight”? I mean, it’s nice that you’re trying to be open and welcoming to same sex marriage but it’s not as simple as homosexual or heterosexual. It’s wonderful that people are coming around to homosexuality but what about the rest of us?

Melissa Harris Perry’s show did a thing on gender (and transgender issues) this weekend, so things are getting better. The only person on non-fiction TV (that I’ve noticed) who regularly mentions the terms “bisexual” and “transgender” is Michael Eric Dyson. And that dude needs his own show.

How certain genitalia indicates how people should act. Sometimes, someone’ll assume all men are cis. If not, they must be gay. Those are the only two possibilities, right? @_@ I have also run across similar type of attitudes among a small number of homo and heterosexual feminists. i.e., Talking shit about bisexuals and pansexuals or what have you. And then call that being “forward-thinking” or “open-minded”…

Happy Coming Out Day!

Um…err, come out? Yes, that. Do it if you need to. Bisexual!

I remember at my college (University of Miami), we had Coming Out Week. Or COW for short. We had these cute shirts with a cow with rainbow spots on it. I wish I still had that shirt. Then we discussed shortening it to COD. I don’t know what ever happened. (I graduated in ‘03.) Hmm.

What’s feminist about excluding an extremely vulnerable class of women who disproportionately suffer from violence, rape, body shaming, unemployment, homelessness, and poverty, who are routinely abused and manipulated by the medical establishment, and who are disproportionately involved in sex work and pornography? That’s what I’d like to know about Raymond-esque “feminists” who see no place in the movement for trans women.
