Teachers
by Jim Benton
Most teachers are wonderful. Except for the two who told my parents and I that I’d never get accepted to community college. I was generally a B student. And in college (University of Miami), I was more of a B+/A student.
I actually remember getting a D on an essay in college, first semester ever. She gave me a chance to rewrite it with a handout that had basic writing rules. “You should have learned this in high school,” she said. I was writing like I was taught in high school. lol
For the few lousy teachers I had, there were so many great ones. Overall, I have a great respect for teachers.

“I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudoscience. And in addition, to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true.” - Carl Sagan

Almost sounds like “Hail Satan” in my head. LMAO
Sagan actually existed. Awesomely.

Is it appropriate for me to put one of these on my teacher’s desk?

On it…

Nicely done.

Diary of a Skeptical Nerd.: Dear Pro-Life, making abortions illegal will not stop them from happening.

brittanibotulism:

So stop screaming “STOP ABORTIONS STOP ABORTIONS STOP ABORTIONS!” and actually get your fucking ass out there and do something to help the rate of unwanted pregnancies. Rally for affordable—nay, free!—contraceptives to be readily available! Fight to end abstinence-only sex “education,” which has been proven in study after study after study to be completely ineffective and only hinders the rate of unwanted pregnancy amongst teens.

Basically, quit screaming about how wrong abortions are, yank your head out of your ass, step down from your pedestal, and get your hands dirty. A holier-than-thou attitude regarding abortions and women who have them doesn’t help anything but your overly-inflated ego.

If the education of our kids comes from radio, television, newspapers - if that’s where they get most of their knowledge from, and not from the schools, then the powers that be are definitely in charge, because they own all those outlets.

wouldn’t it be nice if schools were fully funded & the military had to have bake sales to buy bombs?

Cutting Libraries (by Daniel Solis)
Oakland, CA may close 13 of its 17 libraries. The 4 that would remain open are in affluent neighborhoods (they include Rockridge and Dimond). Among those that would close include the African American Museum and Library, Asian, Chavez, and West Oakland. (As well as both libraries in my neighborhood, Temescal and Piedmont.)
For more information on Oakland library closings, see: Libraries on the Brink | News | Oakland, Berkeley, Bay Area & California | East Bay Express; Save Oakland Libraries; Zombies lurch down Telegraph to support libraries, brains – Oakland North : North Oakland News, Food, Art and Events; Librarians host a story hour to protest library cuts – Oakland North : North Oakland News, Food, Art and Events.

All good information. The same goes for education, which we all know is under attack across the country. Here’s the thing: Ask your parents why they moved to the town you live in. I bet 70% of parents would say they moved their because there was ‘good schools’ and ‘it’s a nice place to raise a family,’ included in which is usually good schools. Good schools are good because they’re well funded, in other words their are high taxes. People bitch about it, but what attracts businesses to town? People. What attracts people to towns? Schools. So what’s the impact of defunding schools? It hurts business. Who’d want to start a business in a town where there are few people? No one. People don’t move to an area to be close to a fucking small business. What’s important to them is their children’s education and safety. Therefore, businesses should be fighting to raise teacher’s salaries, strengthen their unions and keep schools thriving.
